From the cover: Occupying a most important place in naval history, the fleets of the Imperial Russian Navy represent a major subject for study by serving officers, senior historians and naval buffs. The three centuries of naval development covered here demonstrate that its constant need to control its own ports and precious narrow exits to the oceans, as well as its pursuit of access to the Mediterranean, has caused the Russian Navy to be regularly in combat and at the forefront of advances in design, armament and strategy. Throughout the battles with its neighbours, the Crimean, Russo-Japanese conflicts, and the First World War, the Imperial Russian Navy deployed novel ships and weapons, including early use of torpedoes and of the submarine.
