From the cover: When Paul Roches first book, The Rat and the Convent Dove, was about to be published in 1952, he asked Duncan Grant to illustrate it. Duncan forthwith went to the zoo and sketched rats, pigeons, deer, marmosets, baboons and the other various creatures that played their parts in it. The publishers, alas, found his drawings too exact and too beautiful to show off the wayward and fanciful animals of Roches tales. They did, however, adopt most of the blurb which the young Roche had also asked his friend to write…
