From the cover: Joseph Huddart, born in Cumberland on 11th January 1741, was drawn to astronomy and then to the sea. At the age of 22 he was master of a brig, and at 28, with the aid of money he inherited, he built his own brig. On entering the service of the East India Company he was given the command of the Royal Admiral.

During a long life at sea Captain Huddart devoted his talents to the art of navigation and later his services were in demand for advice on harbour improvements including the formation of the East India Dock Company of which he became one …
