From the cover: Brother to Dragons is, in the first instance, the story of a particularly atrocious murder committed in December, 1811, by the two nephews of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States, author of the Declaration of American Independence and of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom. In his lifetime, Thomas Jefferson, who composed his own proud epitaph, could never bring himself to mention the crime of his sisters sons.

The events leading up to the murder and the even more astonishing aftermath provide the narrative framework of the poem, which is, says the author, a dialogue spoken by characters, but not a play. Thus the story is related by the principal characters in it, who meet at an unspecified place and at an unspecified time to try and make sense of what happened so long ago. The …
