Published: London: Faber & Faber, 1959, Hardback in dust wrapper.

From the cover: Cyril Connolly once told Ian Fleming that if men were honest their motor cars came next after their women and children in their list of loves. If that be so, then most men (and their wives, too) should enjoy this book. It is only something over seventy years since the first motor car was imported into England, yet in that time it has inspired writers of every sort and stature to record the romance and enthusiasm which the horseless carriage has undeniably called into being.

For instance, in the stories included in this book, Nigel Balchin tells of a man who fell in love with a Mercedes, and Aldous Huxley recounts how a Vauxhall 30/98 inspired in a timid nobleman the confidence to make a proposal of marriage. Here, too, we have a piece of inspired lunacy from Evelyn Waugh, lan Fleming describing one of the indestructible James Bonds most perilous drives and T. H. White telling the surprising tale of a ghostly Bentley. But that is not all, for there are documentaries too: Charles Jarrott describes the Paris-Vienna race in the old Homeric days of motoring, and S. C. H. Davis, who drove her, tells of old No. 7s legendary win at Le Mans after the crash at the White House.
