From A for amontillado to Z for zapatos the leather, nail-studded boots they used to wear when treading grapes in Jerez Lots of Bottle abounds in fascinating fact and fiction. Dr Johnson has his say on heroic drinking, and Dickens Sairey Gamp makes a suitably befuddled appearance along with real-life characters like Mr Van Horn who drank 35,680 bottles of wine over 22 years and lived to be 98.

Helen Reids sparkling text is further illuminated by around 120 colour and black & white illustrations including the delightful pen-and-ink drawings of Edward Ardizzone and wood-engravings by David Gentleman.
