>From the cover: As Sandhurst cadet R. Todd flew through the air without aid of parachute or propeller, for this was November 1940, and a bomb had just scored a direct hit on the sleeping quarters thirty yards from where he eventually landed the aspiring young actor could have been forgiven for wondering whether there was any post-war acting to come. But he was soon on his way to stardom as leading actor in such films as The Hasty Heart, The Dam Busters and Robin Hood.

In this delightful first volume of autobiography (the story ends in the early 50s with Todd at the height of his fame) we read of his idyllic rural childhood in Northern Ireland, where his father was a national hero, a brilliant sportsman who had played rugby for Ireland; of the young Todds successful rebellion against the doctors who told him, an active teenager, that he was to be an invalid for life the victim of pericarditis; and of his early acting career, causing Vivien Leigh to double up with laughter mid-way through a theatre performance as Anne Boleyn.

Then there are the war years, possibly the most incident-filled and best written of any produced by an actor. Todd was a member of the 6th Airborne Division and was the first man of the main force to parachute out over Normandy on D-Day.

However, soon it is the climb to stardom we follow and of course the many leading ladies who so often became his friends.

Caught in the Act is that rarity among actors memoirs witty, intimate, most pleasingly written and full of the unusual.
