May Day by John Sommerfield

May Day by John Sommerfield soon to be presented for sale on the wonderful BookLovers of Bath web site!

Published: London: Lawrence & Wishart, 1984, Paperback.

From the cover: May Day follows the lives of a number of individuals and families over the course of three days during the build up to a militant May Day. The call All Out On May Day echoes through London, the city in which the novel is vividly set, and brings far-reaching consequences for the characters involved in the dramatic events of the demonstration itself.

One of the few experimental novels written on the British left in the 1930s which is of enduring value and interest, May Day offers a fascinating picture of the social and political life of London in the mid-1980s. When first published in 1936, Left Review greeted it as the best collective novel that we have yet produced in England; the real protagonist is the London working-class, particularly as expressed by one factory Sommerfield gives us the true London, smelt, seen, understood.
