From the cover: A quiet revolution has been taking place in the theory and practice of central and commercial banking during the last twenty-five or thirty years. It may be of some interest to draw together the experiences of the various countries and integrate the underlying trends as constituting part of a general pattern. As the central bank forms the keystone of the financial structure, recent trends in its role and financial policies have been sought to be interpreted in considerable detail. The changing role of the commercial banks has also been duly stressed. Further, the problems posed by the rise and growth of non-banking financial intermediaries like hire-purchase finance companies and development banks have called for close examination. Lastly, as the working of the international financial system has excited a great deal of controversy and as plans for the reform of the present system, and even for its replacement, have been widely discussed, it has been thought fit to devote some attention to such issues as a central bank for central banks and the recently introduced special drawing rights system as possible solutions of the problem of international liquidity. Although the coverage of the book extends over both developed and developing countries, the backdrop, by and large, has been the economic and financial structure of the latter with India occupying the centre of the stage.
