From the cover: It is over 50 years since Major General Stewart wrote his book The Rivers of Iceland. Mike Savage was asked to write this by Sigurdur Helgason when they were together in Tierra del Fuego. Mike agreed, insisting that the book should be used to raise money for the North Atlantic Salmon Fund.
His wish is to enthuse people to come to Iceland to fish and for them to learn what is available. He wants to tell those already coming about other rivers that they may consider, and lastly, for the book to be enjoyed by those who love Iceland, and already know it well.
The first chapters explain how Mike came to Iceland and how his fishing experience, proved to be wonderful training for Icelandic rivers. His early visits are described in some detail, with many stories. He introduces the reader to the country, covering its geography, history, wildlife and people, how the fishing is organised and what to do and not to do. He explains that the best fishing is not necessarily the most expensive.
The next section of the book introduces the readers to rivers, starting at Reykjavik and going clockwise round the Island. Naturally more attention is paid to rivers that he knows well. This section also covers Icelandic fishing for Brown Trout, Sea Trout, Char and even a short section about Greenland. Reminiscences keep breaking into the story and occasionally his tongue can be sensed in his cheek!
Lastly there is a section of statistics. This will be of particular interest to the serious reader who wants to learn more about rivers, number of rods fished and facilities provided etc. Mike has been notorious for always asking questions and the reader is offered the benefit of the answers!
