From the cover: William Hooker, perhaps the greatest of all fruit illustrators, was both an artist and a gardener. His knowledge of fruits, especially, was remarkable and, in the early nineteenth century, the Horticultural Society of London commissioned him to paint and describe about 150 of the most attractive and interesting varieties then being cultivated. Some of the paintings reappeared in his own engravings, and reproductions in anthologies and calendars have since made many of them world famous. The original paintings are among the most prized possessions of the Royal Horticultural Society, and here for the first time nearly 100 of the best, including a few engravings, have been brought together and published in a single volume. Faithfully reproduced in full colour almost to the original size, they portray with botanical accuracy and great beauty a magnificent assortment of favourite fruits plums, apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, cherries, mulberries, nectarines and many more. Several varieties are no longer widely cultivated, which adds to the charm, fascination and horticultural importance of Hookers exquisite work.
A descriptive text by the botanical scholar and gardener Frederick Roach traces the origins and history of each fruit and discusses its horticulture and influence on modern varieties, and William T. Stearn contributes a stimulating introduction to the life and work of William Hooker.
