From the cover: This book gives, by means of studies of selected cities, the story of Town Planning from the first planned settlements of the Hellenic world to the newest planned town in Great Britain.
The author, who has lectured at the School of Planning in London and is an examiner for the Town Planning Institute, has deliberately treated his subject in such a way that his book will have an appeal to others than students of Town Planning. The towns he has chosen for study Caerwent, Constantinople, Flint (an interesting example of a Bastide), Richelieu, Saltaire, for instance illustrate different and typical attempts made by men to forestall the haphazard urban developments with which we are so unpleasantly familiar.
The individual studies show how the towns fitted into their contemporary social and economic back-ground, and the Interludes by which they are linked sketch in the main march of historical events. There are many drawings, plans and photographs to illustrate the text.
