From the cover: The appraisal of visual art is traditionally regarded as being the province of the artist, the art historian and the art critic. But visual art, as a manifestation of human behaviour, is intimately linked with the evolution of man; it must be seen as both an aspect of human ethology and a facet of the cultural needs of a community and this applies as much to primitive as to advanced societies. Considered in this light, visual art becomes a pertinent subject of study for the sociologist, the anthropologist, the biologist and the psychologist, as well as those concerned with educating the community to the maximum of its potentialities.

Each of these essays examines and analyses visual art in terms of some less explored dimension. Between them they demonstrate that art and the artist are open to meaningful scientific study and assessment on a non-aesthetic level. Defective vision, psychological motivations, perception in children, the attitudes of society, as well as education and population statistics, in relation to visual art are among the topics discussed by the team of specialist authors whom Mr Brothwell has recruited. Their combined contributions add up to a thought-provoking survey of a fast developing area of art study.
