Ten carriages ran out of control down the gradient and collided with a regular train that was following. Eighty people died in the worst railway accident in the British Isles until 1915.

The Making of a Railway by L. T. C. [Lionel Thomas Caswall] Rolt
London: Hugh Evelyn, 1971
Hardback with Dust Jacket over Brown boards with Gilt titling to Spine
Illustrated by: S. W. A. Newton (Photos.)
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Maps; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: The great central railway built its line from Nottingham to London Marylebone between 1894 and 1899. Throughout those five years, a young Leicester photographer, S. W. A. Newton, made use of the wide variety of activity, of scenery and of character provided by the construction (and later, the operation) of the last main line to practice his craft. The resulting record is quite unique, in its method as much as in its subject, for through his photographs Newton shows us exactly how a railway line was built (in all its aspects) and the men who built it and ran it. Mr Rolls description of the background and surrounding circumstances of this milestone in railway history and his commentaries provide the perfect complement to the pictures and both combine to form a rare photographic documentary of great historical interest.

Famous Scottish Houses: The Lowlands by Thomas Hannan
London: A & C Black, 1928
Hardback. boards with titling to
Illustrated by way of: Photogravures [101]; It may be a revelation to many to learn that in Scotland there is a very large number of houses which embody in their stones architectural features interesting or beautiful, sometimes both, which introduce to us great historical personages, and recall to us the supernatural legends of the past with the ballads and poetry of ages simpler than our own. This volume treats of fifty such houses, either historic in themselves or the successors of historic houses. They are not treated exhaustively in any one direction, but only enough in each case to give a fair idea of their interest.
