Sir Thomas Lipton Wins by Geoffrey Williams
London: Peter Davies, 1969
Hardback with Dust Jacket over Blue boards with Gilt titling to Spine
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks; Plans; Glossary; From the cover: When he determined to win the international Singlehanded Transatlantic Race of 1968, Geoffrey Williams, a 25 year old Cornishman, had never sailed a boat alone; and when he took Sir Thomas Lipton to sea on the qualifying 500 mile course the 57 foot ketch was at that time the largest boat ever sailed offshore by one man. The 34 competitors (from nine different countries) in this increasingly important international contest left Plymouth on 1 st June and 25 days later Williams was the first to arrive at Newport, U. S. A. , after a record-breaking passage.

His extraordinarily vivid narrative, together with a wealth of photographs and drawings, describes how he financed and built the vessel, then prepared himself and it for the race. He discusses also the design of boats, the tactics and the techniques of singlehanded sailing under transatlantic racing conditions. Those who helped him, the rivals whom he most feared and above all the experience of the lonely passage are all part of this unforgettable personal account. I am a romantic not a sailor, he confesses just before the race; and in taking my dreams to sea there had to come a time of reckoning. This was it and I was very frightened indeed.
