From the cover: There is a fantastic variety to the sea and I have tried in this collection to represent all its moods. The sea is hurricanes and lullabies, gaiety and doom, crashing surf and quiet depths. It is, above all, unconquerable.

So writes William Cole in his introduction. He has collected eighty-five poems, songs and shanties of varying tenors and tones from such diverse sources as Lord Byron and W. S. Gilbert, Aldous Huxley and John Updike, Shakespeare and Walt Whitman. He has divided them into eight different sections and has included authentic sea shanties, A Cradle Song by Tennyson, and lan Serrailliers The Ballad of Kon-Tiki. While some of the poems in this collection hark back to the era of romantic tales and dashing stories, such as Brownings Herve Kiel and Masefields The Yarn of the Loch Achray.

Robin Jacques has brilliantly captured the spirit of the sea in his line drawings, which decorate and enhance the text throughout.

Very Good in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with nicks at the head of the spine and upper panel, heavier tanning at the spine and to the reverse. Text complete, clean and tight.

Blue boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 236 pages. Index. 9¼” x 6½”.

Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. here. HI! Boy can you give a review! You have my mouth watering. I was looking for a review of Mary Stewart;s book of poetry & I found your site review of it. Thank you! I didn’t know she did any poetry. Am recently widowed and regaining my life interests. The font I have encountered in books from the U.K. is smaller than American, so I ordered this Sea book off Amazon USA —- and the Mary Stewart Poetry I was lucky to get for $35.– US dollars. It is listed for $172.– US Dollars by some sellers. Anyway, I can’t afford the $172, can barely afford the $35.– but I do want to say how grateful I am to have run across your site. The love the name too, “Book Lovers of Bath”. I don’t get out much, my travels are through the internet, books, music, DVD’s. Thank you. HUGS FROM ACROSS “THE POND” 🙂
