From the cover: MARS, The Monuments at Risk Survey of England 1995, was commissioned by English Heritage in its role as statutory advisor to the Government on archaeology and was carried out within the School of Conservation Sciences, Bournemouth University between July 1994 and November 1996. The survey represents the first national census of Englands archaeology. It focuses on the survival of archaeological monuments, structures and buildings since 1945, and their condition in 1995. Consideration is given to the threats and impacts that have caused, and continue to cause, the loss of monuments, and to the effects of the main land-uses under which archaeological monuments are typically found. The conclusions of the study will be central to the development and evaluation of future policy towards the conservation and management of Englands archaeological monuments.
