The Killer’s Game by Jay R. Bonansinga lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Macmillan, 1997, Hardback in dust wrapper.
From the cover: A cold current of dread flowed though him. The world was a video game now, full of pop-up menace and surprise ambushes. Anyone he came across might be out to kill him
Veteran hit-man Joe Mood has been informed he has a terminal illness and decides to end it all by putting out an open contract on himself via the internet. The bounty will be S6 million drawn from his Swiss bank account: an offer to every professional assassin, terrorist, mob enforcer, KGB cutthroat and random homicidal scumbag crawling the planet. And most would covet the honour of bagging the legendary slugger. The contest starts at midnight.
As Joe settle down to wait for his own deadline, he notices his answer phone is winking with a message. It seems the clinic has made a terrible misdiagnosis. Joe could live for many years. Suddenly he is desperate to survive but already predatory footsteps are advancing along the corridor. All Joe can do is flee. Out the window. Down the alley. Into a terrifying roller-coaster of violence and destruction.
Meanwhile the lethal bounty hunters are converging on Chicago. The Looker, the Cajun, the Sabatini twins, the Hodu warrior All the kids are coming out to play, and theyll even kill each other to get to Joe first. As he continues his desperate flight into the heart of darkness, the cops and the Feds join in the chase. Last of all comes Joes girlfriend Maizie, determined to save the man she loves.
And, as a crescendo of mayhem explodes around him, perhaps the only thing standing between Joe and perdition is the love of a good woman.
