Salisbury by R. L. P. Robert Lionel Palgrave Jowitt

Salisbury by R. L. P. [Robert Lionel Palgrave] Jowitt lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

B. T. Batsford, 1951, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Maps [1];

From the cover: Salisbury is held by many people, and not all of them Wiltshiremen, to be the finest county town in England. Its Cathedral and Close are of course world famous, but there are besides many ancient and beautiful buildings in the city, and in the immediate neighbourhood there is a series of monuments which includes Stonehenge, Wilton, Longford Castle, and Old Sarum. In this book, R. L. P. Jowitt has written both a history of Salisbury and an account of its most remarkable buildings. The book can thus, with the help of its map, be used as a guide to the Cathedral and City, or it can equally well be read through as an exceptionally well written piece of local topography and history. For whatever purpose it is bought the pleasure in its use will be greatly enhanced by its excellent photographic illustrations, a large proportion of them specially taken for the book. More than 50 in number they include many views of the Cathedral and its monuments, exteriors and interiors of houses and streets in the town, and photographs of Wilton House, the Bishops Palace, Old Sarum, Stonehenge, the Matrons College, etc. Even the most ardent admirers of Salisbury will, we believe, agree that in the text and illustrations to this book the town has been done full justice.

In the British Cities series.
