Peter Davies, 1975, Hardback in dust wrapper.

2nd impression. [First Edition: 1975]

From the cover: In 1817 Jane Austen began to write a novel she did not live to finish. It existed as an incomplete manuscript known as SANDITON until a few years ago, when a long-time admirer of Jane Austens novels, fascinated by the mystery of SANDITON, decided to try her hand at completing it following the clues laid down by the author and writing in a style modelled on hers. The result is a romantic novel imbued with the delicate satirical humour for which the original author is famous.

In Charlotte Heywood Miss Austen created a heroine of intelligence and charm, in whom clear-sighted common sense is often at war with romance. Visiting kind Mr and Mrs Parker in Sanditon, a village which Mr Parker is promoting as a fashionable bathing resort, Charlotte encounters people of all sorts and romance in many guises.

This story of a more elegant age bears testimony to the truth that human nature does not change. Fortune hunters still kowtow to the rich; true love still triumphs surprisingly often; and people are still trying to develop fashionable beach resorts.
