From the cover: There have been innumerable books written about the Second World War, its conduct and its results. This book does something quite new, indeed unique. It presents a chronological account of all the significant military and diplomatic events of World War II, illustrated with photographs, maps and charts, and containing a wealth of statistical information on armies, navies, weapons, density of bombing, and every other aspect of warfare. The facts have been rigorously checked by military historians on both sides of the Atlantic, so that the events of the Second World War are seen in a worldwide context, with equal weight being given to each campaign.

The book opens with the final, desperate years of shadowy peace, with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, Mussolinis conquest of Ethiopia, the Spanish Civil War, and the collapse of democracy in Austria and Czechoslovakia. The complexities of the World War range from the Battle of Britain and El Alamein, to the Siege of Leningrad and the German conquest of Greece, from Guadalcanal and Stalingrad to the Normandy Landings and the Burma Campaign. Finally come the crossing of the Rhine in March 1945 and the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The accompanying graphs offer statistics on an equally wide scale, from Jewish emigration from Germany to German U-boat losses, from Luftwaffe bomb tonnage during the Battle of Britain to aircraft production.

This is a book that no one interested in modern history and warfare can afford to neglect. It is the one essential book about the Second World War.
