From the cover: To sail in gentle seas between sundrenched islands where leisure comes easily, unfettered by time-tables, must be the dream of many city-bound Englishmen. Dan Mulville decided to break the bonds, and, after serving in an ill-fated expedition, paid for by others, he vowed to sail under his own orders.
In the Canary Isles he found LAventurier, an old French fishing boat, 40 feet long, rigged as a gaff cutter. He took out the engine, found a Swedish sailing companion, acquired the yacht and sailed for the West Indies.
In the course of the next few months, he did indeed enjoy to the full the freedom and independence he had foreseen, as well as the beauty and endless fascination of islands and the sea : he also ran into most of the classical adventures and misadventures that are recalled in sailing books, and many that are not.
In this book Dan Mulville writes with a true sailors pen, sensitive to the moods of the weather and the whims of ships. Inevitably sailors get involved in bar fights, smuggling, and shark fishing, and Dan Mulville takes a vigorous part in these and other traditional pursuits ashore and at sea ; but to the recalling of all of them he brings a writers inquisitive mind and resourceful pen.
