Indeed Peter Quennell in his introduction discusses the authors work in comparison with that of two other great literary masters of recent times Marcel Proust and James Joyce. The five books in this Collectors Choice volume have been chosen in the belief that they exemplify the quality and versatility of Nabokovs writing. With the exception of LOLITA all the books were originally written in Russian.
There are qualities of Nabokovs writing which are particularly evident in the five novels reprinted here. First, the brilliance of the authors language, the sheer verbal skill of his writing. Second, the light the novels throw on the Russian literary tradition, a tradition they often parody and whose form and expression Nabokov has drawn on to create his incomparably atmospheric style. Third, the authors impressionistic approach to reality, an approach which is intangible and deceptive. Fourth, the unflinching moral purpose of his work. Nabokov once commented: I believe that one day a re-appraiser will come and declare that far from having been a frivolous firebird, I was a rigid moralist kicking sin, cuffing stupidity, ridiculing the vulgar and the cruel and assigning savage power to tenderness, talent and pride. Ironically, this may be seen to be an especially important element in Nabokovs most famous and controversial novel, LOLITA.
