From the cover: The demand for shooting has increased steadily in recent years. Membership of BASC (the largest organisation devoted to all aspects of the sport) stands at well over 100,000 most of whom cannot afford to pay for high quality shooting and the services of a gamekeeper. With increasing pressure being brought to bear on all fieldsports by the various anti-bloodsport groups, there is a very real possibility of a future ban on the artificial rearing of game for sport. If this becomes law, there will be an acute need for information on how to improve the natural habitat of all kinds of gamebirds, to ensure an adequate supply of birds for the future.

Fortunately, many of todays shooters are aware of this potential problem, and of the need to recreate the kind of environment which existed when farming practices provided the ideal conditions for wild game. The fields used to hold the types of vegetation which encouraged the natural development of game, and plentiful hedgerows provided cover for nesting. The author gives here all the information needed to encourage the successful rearing of gamebirds naturally; draughty woodland is unsuitable for pheasant, for example, and he shows how an ideal environment can be created via skylighting, coppicing and planting.

This book, illustrated throughout with practical photographs and explanatory line drawings, will be a real bonus for anyone concerned about the future of gamebirds. It will provide new ideas and be a source of reference to established shooters; will appeal to farmers who wish to maximise the use of their land by setting up a commercial shoot; and will be of enormous help to any newcomer to the sport.
