From the cover: Africa Uncorked is a wonderful collection of colourful stories and adventures chronicling John and Erica Platters travels along some very unusual wine routes. Sniffing, spitting and swallowing their way through Africa, using vineyards as their beacons, theyve bypassed the usual clichés and carved out a new trans-continental road.
Their safari took them off the beaten track to 13 very different wine-growing countries: from Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia on the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean islands of Madagascar, Mauritius and Reunion: back onto the East African mainland to Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania; through Zimbabwe and South Africa; and west to Namibia. They made astonishing wine discoveries, sampled amazing food, met extraordinary characters, visited fabulous historical sites, ventured into areas which have been no-go zones for foreigners for decades.
Africa Uncorked is not just another wine book. Its tougher, more exotic stuff than the usual gentle ramble through the usual vineyards investigating the usual suspects. The wines of Africa are rooted in rugged landscapes, extreme climates and tumultuous histories. They reflect the past and future, the charms and perils of their countries. This is the backdrop to the Platters blend of personal travel diary and weird and wonderful wine notes, and its splashed with the African flavours they encountered en route. The birds, beasts and beaches; the art, architecture and music; the plants, people and politics. Altogether, this has to be the most original wine publication in years.
