A Sketchbook of Birds by C. F. [Charles Frederick] Tunnicliffe lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Victor Gollancz, 1984, Paperback.
First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Colour Drawings [123];
From the cover: In a lifetime devoted to his art, Charles Tunnicliffe achieved mastery in several different fields, as an etcher and engraver, water-colourist and book illustrator specialising in natural history subjects. As a bird artist, Tunnicliffe stands supreme as the finest English practitioner since Thomas Bewick.
The present work comprises a selection of pages from Charles Tunnicliffes many sketchbooks in which he recorded his observations of birds in the field. The earliest sketch included in this book dates from 1934, and the latest from 1962. In all, 123 sketches have been selected from seventeen sketchbooks.
The work is divided into five separate sections: Seabirds; Waders; Geese, Ducks and Swans; Birds of Prey and Miscellaneous Birds.
A Sketchbook Of Birds gives us, as lan Niall comments in his introduction, a privileged view of the private world of a dedicated artist whose great gifts as a draughtsman were complemented by a countrymans profound understanding of nature and acute observation of birds and animals.
