English Popular Art by Margaret Lambert & Enid Marx

English Popular Art by Margaret Lambert & Enid Marx hits the £1 shelf in my shop.

B. T. Batsford, 1951, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates [8]; Black & White Plates [30];

From the cover: A glance through the very numerous illustrations to this book will give a better idea of its wide scope than any description could do. It will also show how rich and how diverse English popular, or traditional, art has always been. These illustrations include, for instance, examples of Staffordshire, Bristol and Nottingham pottery; samplers, needlework and embroidery; popular prints and the scenery for toy theatres; carved wood, tombstones, toys, Coventry ribbons, weather vanes, marionettes, and an equal number of other subjects. In addition to the photographs, there are eight colour lithographs and many line drawings specially made by Enid Marx, and direct reproductions of old Christmas cards, prints, paintings, Valentines, etc.

So far as its text is concerned, the book is the first to study seriously the variety, the origins and the survival of popular art in England. The authors, Dr. Margaret Lambert and Miss Enid Marx, R. D. I. , have been pioneer collectors and students of the subject, and they are today the leading authorities on it. English Popular Art can, then, be regarded as the first scholarly analysis of its theme, albeit a lively and fascinating one. Or it can be viewed, more simply, as a delightful series of illustrations of the many fanciful, unsophisticated and colourful forms which popular art has taken in England.

In the British Heritage series.
