Winter In London by Ivor Brown hits the £1 shelf in my shop.

From the cover: Ivor Browns new book was written during the winter of 1949-50. It is neither a guide-book nor a series of disconnected essays. It is simply a record of how one person makes the best of the dark months by quiet quest, indoors and out, seeking the London pleasures and curiosities which so many Londoners overlook. With a normal amount of reading of history and poetry to give a background, the familiar buildings and streets and the less familiar alleys yield new ghosts of old notables. The Bankside takes its Shakespearean shape again; Dickens creeps like a snail, beside the river, unwillingly to factory, or sits writing in the still-standing Limehouse tavern to which he gave a lease of life abounding as The Six Jolly Fellowship Porters. New sports are investigated as well as old arts. Parks and gardens, crypts and cemeteries, churches and fairgrounds from Highgate to Greenwich and Richmond to Epping, are subjects for survey and sources of reflection. Mr. Brown has used no special pass or privilege; he has only gone where any can go and that for trifling cost. His idea is that Londoners miss their chances by always rushing for the bus or the train. Why not linger half an hour and look round the corner? Exploring is so cheap, so easy, so exciting and, in this case, so evocative of happy writing.
This book is part of a double pattern of an Anglo-Scottish view of life and will be followed by Summer in Scotland.
