From the cover: IN THIS book Canon Edwards examines Fourth Gospel in the light of its authors express purpose in writing it, which is stated as an attempt to demonstrate the Messianic claims made by Jesus. If that purpose is accepted, Canon Edwards demonstrates that the book is obviously a contemporary document put together in later life from notes made while the events were taking place. He argues that the thoroughly Jewish character of the book has been concealed from the modern reader by the interpretations which long generations of commentators have given to the text, and that it is these, rather than the text itself, which have prompted modern scholars to reject St. John as a possible author. Guided by these principles Canon Edwards examines the Gospel, and the result is to display it in an entirely fresh light, in which the significance of Jesus and his mission, the problem which it raised for the disciples as well as for the Jewish authorities, and its bearing upon the historical life of the Church, are very clearly seen.
