Fred: The Authorized Biography of Fred Winter by Alan Lee

Fred: The Authorized Biography of Fred Winter by Alan Lee hits the £1 shelf in my shop.

Pelham, 1991, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: For more than 30 years, Fred Winter was a dominant personality in the sport of racing. A peerless jockey, widely acknowledged as the best there has ever been in National Hunt, he turned reluctantly but triumphantly to training and, until a serious fall impaired his health and mobility in 1987, he remained at the forefront of his profession, the most respected man in the game.

Here, at last, is his complete biography, written with the full backing of Winter and chronicling, for the first time, the extraordinary life of a man who demanded standards of himself to which others could only vainly aspire. He hated to be beaten, yet was the most gracious of losers. He remained, throughout his career, a private, family man, content with his life and yet always seeking fresh challenges.

Winter was never in love with the idea of riding horses over obstacles and yet made himself the best by sheer determination. Champion Jockey four times, he won the Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup twice each and the Champion Hurdle three times. As a trainer, he was Champion a remarkable eight times and won every major prize available, including the Grand National in his first season.

With the assistance of the people who have been closest to him throughout his life in racing, the book tells his extraordinary story in colourful detail, with many revealing and amusing anecdotes.

At the request of the Winter family, Freds biography has been written by Alan Lee, senior cricket correspondent of The Times and the author of eight previous racing books.
