On This Day: 1859 — The Highway to India Is Begun

Better known as the Suez Canal is a man-made sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It actually opened a mere 10 years later in November 1869 and allows ships to travel between Europe & Asia without having to row all the way around Africa.
