From the cover: Mr. Nicholas, an eccentric on a potentially grand scale, lives with his wife and three sons on a private building estate. Here his wild spirit is uneasily confined among thick pine-woods and gardens so close that the summer air echoes with the sound of tennis parties, while in winter carloads of neighbours, visiting each other for cocktail parties, soon churn up the leaf-sodden road.

What with the unreality of his life and his sons lack of filial enthusiasm, Mr. Nicholas suffers from a continuous need of applause and affection; and his wife and their sons suffer with him.

The half-conscious cruelty, the uneasy laughter, the unbearable closeness of family life, combined with affection find tolerance in the face of total misunderstanding, is the theme of this book. It is felt and described by a young man with detachment, humour and surprised truthfulness.

Thomas Hinde is the most promising writer under thirty we have found since Emma Smith.
